The Fox and the Crow | A Classic Fable About Flattery and Greed

The Fox and the Crow: Once upon a time, there was a hungry fox who was looking for food. He wandered through the forest, but he couldn’t find anything to eat. Finally, he came to a tree and saw a crow sitting on a branch. The crow had a piece of cheese in its beak.

The fox was very tempted by the cheese. He wanted to eat it, but he knew that the crow would not give it to him. So, he came up with a plan.

“Good morning,” said the fox to the crow. “That cheese looks delicious. Would you share it with me?”

The crow did not say anything. It just stared at the fox with its beady eyes.

“I know you don’t want to share it,” said the fox. “But I have a proposition for you. If you sing me a song, I will let you keep the cheese.”

The crow was flattered. It had never been asked to sing before. So, it opened its beak and began to sing.

As the crow sang, the cheese started to wobble in its beak. The fox watched carefully, waiting for his chance.

Just as the crow finished its song, the fox pounced. He caught the cheese in his mouth and ran away.

The Crow’s Revenge | The Fox and the Crow

The crow was left sitting on the branch, all alone. It had been tricked by the fox, but it had learned a valuable lesson. Never trust a flatterer!

The fox was very happy with his new prize. He ate the cheese and then went on his way.

But the crow was not so easily defeated. It had a plan of its own.

The crow flew to the town and found a wise old owl. The owl was very wise and knew many things.

“Owl,” said the crow, “I have been tricked by a fox. He stole my cheese. What can I do?”

The owl thought for a moment. “I have an idea,” he said. “Go back to the tree where you met the fox. When he comes back, pretend to be dead. The fox will think you are no longer a threat and he will leave you alone.”

The crow did as the owl said. He flew back to the tree and sat on the branch, pretending to be dead.

Soon, the fox came back. He saw the crow and thought it was dead. He started to laugh.

“Ha ha!” he said. “I tricked you, crow! You are no match for me!”

The fox started to walk away, but then he heard a noise. He turned around and saw the crow opening its eyes.

“I’m not dead!” said the crow.

The fox was scared. He did not know what to do.

“Please,” said the crow. “Just give me back my cheese.”

The fox was ashamed. He knew he had been wrong to trick the crow.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Here is your cheese.”

The crow took the cheese and flew away. The fox learned his lesson and never tried to trick a crow again.

Moral of the story:

Be careful of flatterers, but don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.
